Description

This is a c. 1937 Mono Press Company pictorial road map of coastal Connecticut and Rhode Island. The map provides tourists with information about places to stay, where to eat, and sites to see during their drive along the New England coast.
A Closer Look
Depicting from New London, Connecticut, to Providence, Rhode Island, restaurants, hotels, and a coffee shop are identified in red text along Highway 1, which appears in red. Eye-catching pictorial vignettes mark sites of interest, including the Kent County Court House, the Indian Burial Grounds, and the Kimball Bird Sanctuary. Banners label cities and towns and blue lines illustrate other major highways. Three photographs fill inland Connecticut and Rhode Island, adding charm. Advertisements for businesses along Highway 1 occupy the verso.
Dating This Piece
When dating this piece, we used information provided on the verso. The Rhode Island State Airport in Warwick is referenced. Today known as the Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport, the airport was opened in 1931 and the Rhode Island State Airport Terminal was completed in 1933. The airport was officially renamed for Theodore Francis Green, a former Rhode Island Governor and longtime senator. Since a name change of this importance likely would have necessitated a new edition of this map, the present edition must date from before the airport was renamed. Also, the earliest reference we can find for the publisher Mono Press Company, dates from 1937, further cementing our c. 1937 date.
Publication History and Census
This map was designed and printed by Mono Press Company of Noank, Connecticut, c. 1937. This is the only known cataloged example of the present map.
