Description

This is a novel 1990 Armenian Traveler's Encyclopedia circular 'panorama' map of the Armenian Highlands, published to illustrate the affected area of the devastating Spitak Earthquake.
A Closer Look
The orange highlights the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic. The Armenian Highlands appear in detail with mountains illustrated in profile and many identified by name with elevations provided. Yerevan is marked in relatively large bold font, while smaller cities are marked throughout the depicted region. Lake Sevan is prominently depicted and immediately draws the viewer's attention. A red dot marks the epicenter of the December 7, 1988 Spitak Earthquake.
The Spitak Earthquake
The Spitak Earthquake (also known as the 1988 Armenian Earthquake) occurred at 11:41 AM on December 7, 1988 and lasted for less than 20 seconds. 113 countries, including the United States, sent substantial humanitarian aid after Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev formally requested help. The casualty numbers are staggering: between 25,000 and 50,000 killed and as many as 13,000 injured.
Publication History and Census
This map was created for and published in the Armenia Traveler's Encyclopedia (Армения Энциклопедия путешественника) in 1990. The encyclopedia is well represented in institutional collections, but the separate map is uncatalogued. Both the atlas and the separate map are scarce on the private market.
