Description

This is a 1987 GiG Playmobil pictorial game map of the United States published as part of a promotional scheme where children could send proofs of purchase to win 10 million lire. The game combines traveling across the United States with promoting Playmobil sets related to traveling.
A Closer Look
The map depicts the continental United States in a slightly unconventional manner: Los Angeles appears where we expect to find Texas. The game takes the form of a cross-country race across the U.S. The race begins in San Francisco and then winds its way across the country, with stops in Yellowstone, Aspen, Las Vegas, the surprisingly located Los Angeles, Indianapolis, and Pittsburgh (misspelled on the map) and ends in Atlantic City, where the winner discovers a chest of gold doubloons. Misfortune and luck strike at the locations mentioned above if a player lands on one of them, with the directions in the lower left corner. In most cases, the player receives a missed turn or must go back a few spaces. Only two provide help: Los Angeles and spot 18, which both move the player forward extra spaces.
Publication History and Census
This map was published by GiG in 1987. While likely printed in decent quantity, this map is not cataloged in OCLC, and we have not found another digitized example.

Cartographer

GiG (1968 - 2006) was an Italian toy manufacturer founded by Gianfranco Aldo Horvat (1942 - 2009) near Florence in 1968. It became the Italian distributor of brands such as Nintendo, My Little Pony, the Care Bears, and Playmobil. It formed an alliance with the Giochi Preziosi Group in 1994. Horvat sold GiG to Giochi Preziosi in 1999 and left the firm for good in 2003. More by this mapmaker...
