1946 Secretaria de Agricultura Map of Baja, California, Mexico

This is a 1946 Segretaria de Agricultura y Fomento map of Baja California. The map depicts the region from the Pacific Ocean to the Mexican state of Sonora and from the United States to San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas at the southern tip of Baja California. Highly detailed, myriad cities, towns, and villages are labeled throughout Baja California, including Tijuana, Ensenada, La Paz, and Cabo San Lucas. Roads throughout the region are illustrated. Coastal lights and lighthouses are indicated by red circles and semicircles, with the distances they are visible out to sea noted. An inset map of the port of La Paz and its surroundings is situated in the upper right corner and an inset map of Magdalena Bay and its surroundings is included in the lower left quadrant.

Publication History and Census

This map was created and published by the Segretaria de Agricultura y Fomento in 1946 as part of a series of maps published illustrating the states of Mexico. We are aware of at least two editions, one of which was published in 1942 and the current example which dates from 1946. Maps from this series are very scarce on the market and this is the first from 1946 that we have encountered. We are aware of a nearly complete, if not complete, set of these maps dating from 1942 in the collection at Columbia University, but individual maps from this set can be extremely difficult to trace.
