Description

A remarkable and unique c. 1830 manuscript plan or map of Bombay (Mumbai), India. The map covers Bombay from roughly modern day Andheri East to modern day Zirad. Cartographically, it is based on the c. 1775 work of Jean-Baptiste After Mannevillette. The Isle of Bombay is separate from Salset, and, at the base of the peninsular island group, just south of Bombay City, is the Isle of Old Women or Colaba. The city of Bombay is exquisitely rendered with individual city blocks apparent. The whole is drawn in a fine hand reminiscent of French military manuscript survey work. We have seen only one other manuscript plan of Bombay, so this is quite a special rare item.

Condition

Very good. Minor restoration upper right.
