The Transformation of Dartmouth's Campus.

Title

[Untitled / Dartmouth College Green].
  1913 (undated)     5.25 x 35.75 in (13.335 x 90.805 cm)

Description

A scarce c. 1913 yard-long panoramic photograph of Dartmouth College. It displays the campus at the tail end of a dramatic transformation, as fires and increased enrollment saw the construction or reconstruction of multiple structures.
A Closer Look
Oriented towards the north, this panoramic photograph takes in the Dartmouth Green (formerly College Green) and the buildings on three sides of it. They are, from left to right:
  1. Casque and Gauntlet (the college's second-oldest senior society)
  2. Wheelock House
  3. College Hall (now the Collis Center)
  4. Old Sanborn Hall and a bank building not owned by the college
  5. Old Tuck Hall (now McNutt Hall)
  6. Parkhurst Hall
  7. Crosby House (now part of the Blunt Alumni Center)
  8. The Church of Christ (also known as the White Church, burned down in 1931, later reconstructed at a different site on College St.)
  9. Webster Hall
  10. Rollins Chapel
  11. Dartmouth Hall (in a sense the oldest building on campus, though the original structure burned in a fire in 1904 and was reconstructed in the same style between 1904 and 1906)
  12. Bartlett Hall
Based on the structures present, this photograph must date from after 1911, when Parkhurst Hall was constructed, and before 1914, when Robinson Hall was built on the site of Old Sanborn Hall and the bank building at left. Aside from fires and consequent reconstruction, the campus was reshaped at the turn of the 20th century thanks to a master plan drawn up by Charles Alonzo Rich (1854 - 1943), an architect who was himself a Dartmouth alumnus, and College President William Jewett Tucker. Tucker's scheme for a 'new Dartmouth' also saw enrollments increase dramatically, necessitating the construction of new buildings to house and educate students.
Publication History and Census
This photograph is undated and contains no publication information, but for reasons discussed above must date to between 1911 and 1914. The only text on the photograph is '3033A' towards bottom-left, the meaning of which is unclear. We are unaware of any other examples of this photograph in institutional collections or on the market.
