Description
This is an 1895 Alfred Shepard and Shadrach Hooper map of Colorado highlighting the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. Published in conjunction with a National Educational Association conference in Denver, the map encourages conventioneers to use the railroad to visit Colorado's Rocky Mountains.
A Closer Look
With bold color highlighting and strong printing, the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad takes center stage on this map of Colorado. Standard (red) and narrow (black) gauge lines are highlighted, with stops named. Seven striking color schemes emphasize specific sections of the Denver and Rio Grande network and correspond to information printed on the verso. These were intended to help visiting educators plan excursions. Other railways are included, among them the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe; the Missouri and Pacific; the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific; the Burlington and Missouri River; and the Union Pacific.Publication History and Census
This map was compiled by Alfred Shepard, designed, engraved, and printed by Knight, Leonard, and Company, and published by Shadrach Hooper in 1895. We note examples cataloged at: Yale University, the Newberry Library, the Denver Public Library, Colorado College, the University of Chicago, the Wisconsin Historical Society, Southern Methodist University, the Colorado School of Mines, the University of Arizona, and the New York Public Library. Alfred Day Shepard (July 10, 1846 - January 25, 1897) was an American educator who served as Arapahoe County Superintendent of Schools in Denver, Colorado, from 1887 until 1896. Born in Waterford, New York, Shepard arrived in Colorado in the fall of 1876. He was elected Superintendent of Schools for District No. 2 in 1879. During his time as superintendent for District No. 2, he increased the number of school buildings from 1 to 7. He was elected County Superintendent of Schools in 1887 and held that position until 1896, the year before he died. He was very widely respected as County Superintendent and was known as an 'absolute authority' on school law. He died of consumption at home at the age of 50. He married Eunice H. Shadrach Kemp Hooper (May 30, 1841 - March 18, 1923) was an American railroad man and advertising executive. Sometimes known as the 'father of railroad advertising,' Hooper was born in New Albany, Indiana. Hooper worked as a steamboat blacksmith and engineer early in life before enlisting in the Union Army on June 1, 1861. He was a member of the 23rd Indiana Regiment of Volunteer Infantry and is said to have fought at the Battle of Shiloh and been part of General Sherman's March to the Sea, when, it is said, he was promoted to Major, which he was referred to for the rest of his life. He was mustered out of the Union Army on April 7, 1865. Then, he began working for railroads and held positions with the Louisville, New Albany, and Chicago; the Jackson and Saginaw; the Hannibal and St. Joseph; and the Iowa Central, among others. He joined the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad in June 1884 as the General Passenger and Ticket Agent. Not long after joining the Denver and Rio Grande, Hooper embarked on a comprehensive advertising campaign that helped make the Denver and Rio Grande known as the greatest scenic route in the world. Hooper also led the drive for the Denver and Rio Grande to have a recognizable advertising emblem and solicited artistic submissions. By autumn 1884, Hooper had selected a design. He also authored numerous pamphlets and books, among these are 'The Beautiful Denver and Rio Grande: Scenic Line of the World', 'The Story of Manitou', 'Tourists' Hand Book to Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah', 'Rhyme of the Rockies', and 'The Gold Fields of Colorado'. He also penned 'A Historical Sketch of the 23rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry', which he distributed at the 23rd Indiana's 1910 reunion in New Albany, Indiana. Learn More...
