1982 J.C.A. Production Pictorial Map of Douala, Cameroon

This is the only known example of a c. 1982 J.C.A. pictorial map of Douala, Cameroon - published in Cameroon. While this style of local-focused promotions map is common in the United States and Europe, it is the first time we have seen the cartographic model applied to a west African city - marking this as a unique a significant piece.

A Closer Look

The map takes on a view-like quality. It looks north on Duala south of the old city center, detailing the Deido, Akwa I, Bonalembe and, across the Wouri, the Besseke districts. The overall view presents a richly verdant city emerging from the dense tropical greenery of the Wouri River estuary. Both local and global companies are highlighted, most of which likely paid the maker for placement. So too are high schools, churches, mosques, market, and other civic structures. Large vignettes highlight Cameroon’s rich cultural heritage, artistic, and musical traditions – including the famous hour-glass shaped talking drum. The extraordinary Mount Cameroon (named here Fako after its highest peak) appears in the background. The Aéroport International Douala appears in the lower right, underscoring this map’s likely raison d'état, the promotion of Cameroon Airlines and general tourism.

Dating This Piece

While this piece is undated, the presence of the Cameroon Airlines Boeing 747 in the bottom right provides a firm earliest date that this piece could have been created. Cameroon Airlines (founded in 1971) received its first 747 in 1981. Since airlines have always been enthusiastic about promoting their newest aircraft, we believe that this piece can date no earlier than 1982.
