Description


This is a 1973 Florida Department of Transportation pictorial tourist road map of Florida, issued the year Florida's Turnpike was completed. Florida's twelve regions (as decided by the Department of Transportation) are shaded different colors with interstates are highlighted in red. The Florida Turnpike, which runs from Miami north to Interstate 75, appears is boldly green. Pictorial 'stamps' are scattered throughout and highlight famous buildings including the state capital and Disney World, NASA, and tourists enjoying the sun and surf. Fish, sailing ships, and a Miami Beach hotel also appear. A table of 'Florida's Attractions' separated out by region is situated in the lower left.
Florida's Turnpike
Florida's Turnpike is a 309 mile toll road. It runs diagonally across the state from an interchange with I-75 in Wildwood to an interchange with I-95 in Miami Gardens. The main Turnpike was constructed between 1957 and 1964, with an extension added in 1974.
Publication History and Census
This map was created and published by the Florida Department of Transportation in 1973. Eight examples of this map are cataloged in OCLC and are part of the institutional collections at the Library of Congress, Ball State University, the University of South Carolina, the University of Georgia, the Newberry Library, the University of Florida, the University of Minnesota Minneapolis, and the University of California, Santa Barbara.
