Description

This is a 1930 Wright, Harvey, and Wright city plan or map of Honolulu, Hawaii. Visitors to Honolulu in the 1930s encountered a city full of tropical charm, with opportunities to lay out on the beach or even learn to surf. The map captures Honolulu in the decade before World War II (1939 - 1945), which led to a population and development explosion that continued through the post-war decades, transforming the city.
A Closer Look
The map depicts Honolulu from Fort Shafter and Tripler Hospital to Kahala Beach and the Waialae Golf Club. Popular attractions are identified: the Punchbowl, Diamond Head, Waikiki Beach, the Bishop Museum, Waikiki Aquarium, and the Memorial Natatorium. Several hospitals, schools, and the University of Hawaii are also illustrated. Oil storage tanks, the gas works, and pineapple canneries appear in the harbor.
Verso Content
A street index and suggested itinerary occupy most of the verso, including a smaller map of Oahu.

This map was created by the firm Wright, Harvey, and Wright and published by the Hawaii Tourist Bureau in 1930. We note a single cataloged example, located at the University of Hawaii Mānoa.
