Istanbul-ministrytourism-1966

Title

Istanbul, a city of history and sea.
  1966 (dated)     27.25 x 39.25 in (69.215 x 99.695 cm)

Description

This is a 1966 Turkish Ministry of Tourism pictorial map of Istanbul, Turkey. The map depicts the city from the western city walls to the Bosporus and a small part of the Asian side of the city and from the Ihlamur Palace to the Sea of Marmara. Beautifully rendered, at least 286 different locations are numerically labeled throughout the European side of the city and another two dozen are marked on the Asian side of the Bosporus. Each of these locations corresponds with an index situated in the upper left quadrant that provides the name and grid location of each site. Mosques, tombs, theological schools, palaces, bazaars, cisterns, aqueducts, universities, libraries, museums, and hotels are among these locations, providing the average tourist with an impossibly long list of intriguing sites to visit during their stay. The Hagia Sophia (number 13 situated in grid J 8) is beautifully illustrated in profile, as are numerous other mosques and the Valens Aqueduct, completed in the late 4th century AD during the reign of Roman Emperor Valens. Vessels of varying size ply the waters of the Bosporus, the Golden Horn, and the Sea of Marmara. Leander's Tower is also illustrated in the waters of the Bosporus.
