Description

This is a c. 1948 F. Richard pictorial tourist map of Kansas. Pictorial vignettes highlight sites across the state along with historic events and monuments. Footprints trace the Mormon Trail and the Santa Fe Trail, while horse hoofprints mark the Oregon Trail and steer hoofprints mark the Chisholm Trail. A stagecoach flies down the Butterfield Stage Trail chased by an angry Native American. President Eisenhower's home is illustrated and labeled, as are historic churches, universities, and several factories. Boeing's factory in Wichita is highlighted with a cartoon version of a B-29. Illustrations of graduates in their regalia mark the state's three teachers' colleges. Other comical vignettes mark the U.S. Migration Waterfowl Refuge, Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary, and the Knute Rockne Memorial.
Publication History and Census
This map was drawn by F. Richard and jointly published by the Kansas Industrial Development Commission and the Kansas State Highway Commission. We note an OCLC reference for a map bearing the same title that identifies five cataloged examples in institutional collections across the United States. However, the OCLC listing tentatively dates the map as c. 1940, which leads us to think there could possibly be more than one edition of the present map. Since these institutions have not digitized their collections, we have been unable to verify if these cataloged examples are in fact the same edition as the presently offered piece.
