Description

A colorful 1963 map of Lake Tahoe and its environs, produced by the U.S. Forest Service that highlights recreational and land uses.
A Closer Look
The area around Lake Tahoe is displayed, from Donner Lake and Truckee in the north to the American River and U.S. Route 50 in the south. Land ownership is noted according to the legend at the bottom, with green denoting national forest land and white indicating private land. Remnants of the original grid-like parceling of land from the early days of California's American statehood are still clearly evident. A range of highways, roads, trails, campgrounds, ranger stations, state parks, and other features are also recorded. (The 1960 Winter Olympics took place at Squaw Valley Resort, near the eponymous state park to the west of Lake Tahoe.) Cities and towns are also laid out, including the constituent parts of South Lake Tahoe (not incorporated until 1965), with individual buildings marked with black squares. The verso includes information on a wide range of outdoor activities, from scenic drives to hunting, fishing, and skiing.
Publication History and Census
This map was prepared by the U.S. Forest Service in 1963. The OCLC notes it among the holdings of ten institutions. The University of Nevada, Reno also holds an example that is not cataloged in the OCLC.
