Title

  1927 (undated)     11 x 18 in (27.94 x 45.72 cm)

Description

This is a charming and rare c. 1927 map of Charles Lindbergh's historic first solo nonstop across the Atlantic in the now-iconic Spirit of St. Louis. The map depicts the region from the Pacific Ocean to Russia and from Hudson Bay and Scandinavia to South America. Spirit of St. Louis, colored yellow, appears over the mid-Atlantic, over half of the way to Paris, its destination on this legendary flight. San Diego, St. Louis, and New York are labeled in the United States, all-important waypoints on Lindbergh's flight. Very little other detail is present, except national borders and labels identifying the illustrated countries. Beautiful color adds to the appeal of this historic and extremely rare piece.
Lindbergh's Historic First Solo Transatlantic Flight from New York to Paris
The historic flight from New York to Paris began in San Diego, where Lindbergh picked up Spirit of St. Louis, which he then flew across the country to Long Island. He departed Roosevelt Field, Long Island, on May 20, 1927, and landed at Le Bourget Airport north of Paris thirty-three-and-a-half hours later on May 21. He returned to Washington, D.C. on June 11, after being feted in Belgium and Great Britain.
Publication History and Census
This map was drawn by Jack Lynas and printed c. 1927. This is the only known printed example. We have located one other example, an unsigned manuscript copy of the present map, that is now part of a private collection.
