Description

This is a 1943 Jylbert pictorial map of Madagascar. Published during the Nazi occupation of France, this map was part of a series of 20 maps of the French Empire drawn by Jylbert to educate French schoolchildren on the wonders of the Empire and help instill some national pride in the next generation.
A Closer Look
Eye-catching illustrations fill the island. The Rova of Antananarivo marks Antananarivo (Tananarive in French), Madagascar's capital, before, during, and after the French colonial period. Indigenous Malagasy architecture marks many of the villages. Malagasies appear in farms and tending livestock. A portrait of two Malagasy occupies the bottom right corner.
Madagascar under French Colonization
The French invaded Madagascar in 1883 and established a protectorate in 1890 (which the Malagasy did not recognize). The French marched on Antananarivo in 1895 and, after they reached the city in September, successfully forced Queen Ranavalona III to capitulate. France annexed Madagascar in 1896 and declared it a colony a year later. Ten years of civil war followed. The Malagasy Uprising broke out in 1947 and, after a time in the French Community and provisional government, gained full independence on June 26, 1960.
Publication History and Census
This map was created by Jylbert and published by 'BD' in France in 1943. It does not appear in OCLC and is scarce on the market.

Cartographer

Jylbert (fl. c. 1934 - c. 1956) (known only by this pseudonym) was an illustrator active in France during the mid-20th century. They illustrated an edition of Voltaire's masterpiece Candide published in 1934. During World War II, Jylbert created a series of at least 20 pictorial maps published in 1943 that were likely used to teach the French Empire to schoolchildren. They also illustrated an atlas of French provinces that was published in 1943. Per OCLC, Jylbert illustrated editions of many celebrated novels during the 1950s, including Moby Dick, The Three Musketeers, Gulliver's Travels, and Treasure Island. More by this mapmaker...
