1834 Sumner Map of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont

This is an 1834 H.F. Sumner pocket map of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Cities and towns throughout identified, along with the ever-growing road network. The region's most well-known lakes, including Lake Winnipesaukee, Moosehead Lake, and Lake Champlain, are wonderfully depicted, as well as its many rivers. Beautiful original color is employed to differentiate between counties. An inset map in the upper left illustrates northern Maine. Statistical tables presenting population data for these three states from 1820 and 1830 are included in the lower right.

Publication History and Census

This map was created for and published by Hiram Frederick Sumner in 1834. We note five examples cataloged in OCLC: at the Connecticut Historical Society, the Connecticut State Library, the Peabody Essex Museum, the Newberry Library, and the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. This map is rare on the private market.
