Description

An unusual and humorous die cut postcard pictorial map of Manhattan, produced in 1946 by Max Poschin.
A Closer Look
The island of Manhattan is surrounded by the Hudson, Harlem, and East Rivers. Landmarks throughout are noted, including bridges, tunnels, skyscrapers, train stations, and more. The Madison Square Garden shown here was one of three predecessors to the current structure bearing that name, located on 8th Ave. between 49th and 50th. It was relocated in 1968 to the current location, which replaced the Beaux-Arts 'Old Penn Station' seen here. The map is overlaid with humorous comments and puns about the city, written in the style of a postcard message, such as 'everyone get their scents worth' riding the subway.
Publication History and Census
This postcard was published in 1946 by Max Poschin, a California-based artist who specialized in novelty die cut souvenir postcards. Surviving examples of his Manhattan card appear to be especially rare; it is not listed among the holdings of any institution and has no known market history.
