Description

This is a 1948 Southern Bell Telephone Company city plan or map of Miami, Florida, published for the American Legion National Convention.
Conventioneers in Miami
The map highlights locations important to conventioneers: hotels, the Legion Convention Hall, and Miami Beach Senior High School (where some of the convention events were held). A circular 'inset' at center 'magnifies' downtown Miami and marks the parade assembly area and route. Convention Corporate Headquarters and the American Legion National Headquarters (temporarily for the convention) are marked as well. The Orange Bowl, the Florida East Coast Railroad station, and the greyhound bus station are also noted. Apart from convention sites, the Pratt Veterans Hospital is prominently featured, as is the Miami International Airport, Miami Springs Golf Club, and Hialeah Park.
Verso Content
On the verso, convention attendees were provided with a list of organization headquarters along with an index of hotels where each state delegation was staying and a convention program.
Publication History and Census
This map was created and published by the Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company for the Thirtieth National Convention of the American Legion that took place in Miami, Florida, from October 18 until October 21, 1948. This is the only known cataloged example.
