Description

A whimsical 1977 pictorial tourist map of Moloka'i, Hawaii, drawn by Fritz Alseth and printed by the Fisher Printing Company
A Closer Look
Covering the entire island of Molokai, the map combines a realistic bird's-eye view with cartoonish human and animal figures to highlight various historical sites and recreational activities, including hunting, golfing, and beachgoing. Sites around the island are labeled, including airfields, churches, lighthouses, hotels, agricultural sites (including a Del Monte pineapple plantation), and harbors. Notes, printed in the style of handwriting, and illustrations immediately around the map continue this intermingling of historical and recreational information. Around the border of the map are advertisements for local shops, banks, hotels, and restaurants.

The verso includes a map of Kaunakakai, the largest town on the island, along with illustrations of some businesses there. Additional panels introduce the island's plants, animals, and general history and culture (the 'closest approximation of old-time Hawaii'). At the bottom-right are more advertisements, a panel for addressing the map in the mail, and an impressive cover illustration.
Publication History and Census
This map was illustrated by Fritz Alseth, also known as Fredric or Fred Alseth, printed by the Fisher Printing Company, and published by the Map Makers (a local firm about which nothing is known) in 1977, likely for the Molokai Chamber of Commerce. The OCLC notes two examples of the map at Ball State University and the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. However, the presumed date of 1978 and the lack of a mention of the Fisher Printing Company or the Map Makers suggests that this might be a different edition.

CartographerS

Fredric Orval Alseth (February 26, 1924 - November 29, 2006), also known as Fritz Alseth, was an illustrator and missionary who traveled widely throughout the American West and Mexico. Born in Billings, Montana, Alseth moved to Wisconsin with his family as a child before attending college and majoring in art, though he served as an engineer in World War II. After the war, Alseth moved to California, where he would spend most of the rest of his life. He was a commercial artist in the San Francisco Bay Area for roughly twenty years and produced many works relating to different localities in California, including promotional maps. In the late 1960s, he switched primarily to illustrating children's books, and in the mid-late 1970s, he focused on missionary work in Australia, Hawaii, and Latin America. He moved to the Northeastern U.S. and then Lake Chapala, Mexico, in the 1980s, but at some point returned to California, where he died in 2006. More by this mapmaker...

The Fisher Printing Company (c. 1966 - 2023) was a Honolulu-based printer that was also an office supply (including office furniture) and stationery store at various points in its history. Founded as the Multigraphy, List, and Letter Co. in 1929 in Honolulu, the company was bought in 1933 by Geoffrey C. Fisher and Hy Holloway, who renamed it the Fisher Corporation. The company took on more printing and stationery services from the 1940s and, in 1967, was renamed Fisher Hawaii. Around the same time, the printing division was spun off as the Fisher Printing Company and sold directly to its employees, which was considered the first such sale in Hawaii's history. In later years, Fisher Corporation became a pioneer in the office supply warehouse model, influencing larger 'big box' stores like Office Max and Staples. The Fisher Printing Company appears to have recently gone out of business (c. 2023). Learn More...
