This is a c. 1948 A. Leconte pictorial map of Paris, France. Paris' spectacular monuments are illustrated, with chateaus, churches, and cathedrals rendered on the verso.
A Closer Look - Nouveau Paris Monumental
Depicting all of Paris and its immediate environs, illustrations highlight monuments across the city: Notre Dame, the Louvre, the Arc de Triomphe, the Eiffel Tower, and the Panthéon, among others. Paris' famous parks appear as green oases: Jardin du Luxembourg, the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, the Jardin des Tuileries, the Bois de Boulogne, and the Bois de Vincennes, among others. Red overprinting maps the Paris Métro, with dots marking and identifying stations.
Monuments et Vues des Environs de Paris
The verso includes a more general map covering at least 50 miles in all directions from Paris. Vignettes illustrate churches, chateaus, cathedrals, and palaces: Chateau de Versailles, the Palais de Fontainebleau, and the Cathédrale de Chartres, among others. The regional road network is highlighted.
Publication History and Census
This map was published by A. Leconte c. 1948. The map on the verso was drawn by F. Menetrier. Monumental maps of Paris began being published in the 1880s, and Leconte published his first map of Paris in the 1920s. Given that all editions of his maps of Paris bear nearly the same title, it is difficult to ascertain a good census for each of the numerous editions Leconte published during his career.

Cartographer

André Leconte (fl. 1880 - 1930) was a Paris based guidebook and map publisher active in the latter part of the 19th and early 20th centuries. He is one of the publishers of the attractive art nouveau style "Nouveau Paris Monumental" series. Leconte is often associated with L. Guilmin, another Paris based map publisher of the same period. Early in World War II (1939 - 1945) the firm published anti-German propaganda, but briefly shut down operations during the occupation. Leconte's name appears on maps and guidebooks of Paris well after his death (though we can't date this event with any precision) to about 1980. More by this mapmaker...
