Description

This is a 1969 'National Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam' map of the Washington, D.C. illustrating the massive November 15, 1969 'March Against Death' protest - one of the most significant anti-war protests in the 60s. 'March Against Death' was a 44,000 strong single-file march wherein each participant wore a placard bearing either the name of a soldier killed in Vietnam or a Vietnamese village destroyed. A dashed line marks the route of the March, while other markings indicate assembly areas and rally sites, along with the medical center, the Marshal's Center, and other important locations.
The November Mobilization
The 'March Against Death' was part of the 'Second Moratorium to End the War in Vietnam'. In November of '69 nearly 500,000 people, many of them youths whose generation was directly affected by the draft, descended on the Washington from across the country to make their voices heard. The 'March Against Death' began on the night of Thursday, November 13. It took until Saturday morning for the 44,000 protesters to march from Arlington National Cemetery past the White House to the Capitol. Then, on Saturday November 15, 500,000 people marched from the Capitol past the White House to the Ellipse, where they heard speeches and saw performances by Pete Seeger (who sang John Lennon's song 'Give Peace A Chance'), John Denver, Arlo Guthrie, and Peter, Paul and Mary.
