Description

This is a 1932 Isaac L. Maduro, Jr. postcard map of the western hemisphere. The map depicts the region from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean and from Canada to Cape Horn. Created to celebrate the Panama Canal, 'the kiss of the oceans', the artistic focus of the piece lies in the faces of the two mermaids looking at each other across the isthmus of Panama. The card has texture; the topography of the map is raised, along with the mermaids' faces. Statistics about the Panama Canal are situated in the lower left corner, including its length, the width of the channel, the area of the Canal Zone, and the time it takes to travel through the locks and the canal. Very few locations are labeled throughout the map. Only two countries are labeled, Canada and Panama, along with just over three dozen cities. Two Canadian provinces, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, are also labeled.

This card was copyrighted by Isaac L. Maduro, Jr. and postmarked in 1932.
