Description

An amusing piece of Florida memorabilia, this is a c. 1945 map of the route of the 'Good Ship Pippin', an Everglades 'jungle cruise' operating out of Fort Lauderdale.
A Closer Look
The circular course of the Pippin is charted, from its port at Bahia Mar along the South Fork of the New River, through smaller waterways and back up the coast to Bahia Mar. En route, the ship passes snakes, alligators, orange groves, two railways, U.S. Route 1, and more. The Naval Air Base noted here was transferred to civilian use in 1946 and today is the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The Pippin' appears to have been one of several competing 'jungle cruises' operating out of Fort Lauderdale at the time, and claimed to be superior to its double decked competitors for the reasons listed at bottom-left.
Publication History and Census
This map was printed by the Las Olas Printing Co. around the year 1945. It is not known to exist in any institutional collections and is scarce to the market.
