Description

This is a 1983 David Scott Goodwin pictorial map of Portland, Oregon. Historical facts appear alongside local businesses, lending the piece the air of a treasure hunt.
A Closer Look
Nestled in a bend of the Willamette River, Goodwin's map playfully captures Portland and all it has to offer. Over 100 businesses, colleges, hotels, radio and television stations, sports venues, and other locations are depicted. Short captions provide information or historical anecdotes about the city. Forest Park dominates the upper center, with Council Crest appearing at the top center. Mount St. Helens (only a few years after the disastrous 1980 eruption) occupies the upper right corner. Mt. Hood appears on the lower right, with skiers taking advantage of the peak's year-round skiing. Information about annual events that take place in the city, along with other practical information for visitors, appears along the bottom. The carousel horse in the title references the fact that 4 historic carousels are part of the city and help Portland earn the nickname 'city of carousels.'
