This is a 1975 Bob Shedd pictorial tourist promotional map of South Lake Tahoe and Lake Tahoe, likely prepared for the local Chamber of Commerce.
A Closer Look
The recto map focuses on South Lake Tahoe and nearby regions of the South Shore of Lake Tahoe, including Emerald Bay, Fallen Leaf Lake, and Stateline, effectively a continuation of South Lake Tahoe on the Nevada side of the border (notable for containing several casinos). Streets, highways, campgrounds, beaches, picnic areas, stables, resorts, ski areas, local businesses, public institutions like hospitals and schools, the airport, and topographic features are marked throughout. Information for boaters is especially prevalent, with anchorages, routes, and distances noted. A legend at the bottom right and a street index at the right provide additional information for the traveler. Surrounding the map are advertisements for local businesses, including restaurants, laundromats, clothiers, and trail rides.
The verso includes a similar map of the wider area around Lake Tahoe as far north as Truckee and as far south as Echo Lake. Compared to the recto map, more information is provided here on the mountain peaks and ski areas around the lake, including Squaw Valley, which hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics. Additional advertisements, as well as information on the area's history, one-day side trips, and campgrounds, are included on the verso.Publication History and Census
This map was prepared by Bob Shedd in 1975, most likely for the local Chamber of Commerce. Although the OCLC does note several tourist maps of the Lake Tahoe region attributed to Shedd, they all date from significantly later than the present map.
Cartographer
Robert A. Shedd (July 20, 1920 - April 6, 2002) was a commercial artist, sign painter, and avid skiier who was active in the Lake Tahoe region for much of his career. Born in Stockton, California, Shedd served in the U.S. Army's 648th Tank Battalion during World War II. After the war, he was active in the Boy Scouts and arranged frequent ski trips to Lake Tahoe. In 1964, Shedd and his family moved to Lake Tahoe, where he pursued a career as a professional skier while also making money painting signs for local businesses. In 1967, he became the first mountain manager in Bear Valley, California (some 30 miles south of Lake Tahoe) and helped found the Association of Professional Patrollers. In 1976, Shedd and his family returned to South Lake Tahoe, where he founded Bob Shedd's Signs and Designs. Over the years, Shedd produced many drawings and paintings of Lake Tahoe and environs, including in the 1977 published work Lake Tahoe Historical Sketches (Mountain Press: Stateline, NV).
