1853 Bond Map of the White Mountains, New Hampshire

WhiteMountains-bond-1853

First topographical map of the White Mountains.

Title

A Map of the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
  1853 (dated)     15.5 x 17 in (39.37 x 43.18 cm)     1 : 142560

Description

This is George Phillips Bond's 1853 map of the White Mountains, considered the first accurate topographic map of that range. Here, 'the names of the individual peaks of the Presidential Range appear for the first time on any map, as well as the names Cannon Mt., Twin Mts., Carrigain, Tremont, and Giant's Stairs.' ( Bent, p. 84).
A Closer Look
Coverage extends roughly from Randolph to Tamworth and from Rumney to Fryburg. Mount Washington appears just north and to the right of center. Bond was not a trained cartographer, and his map has as a primitive aspect. In addition to swapping Mount Washington and Mount Adams, the map only tenuously illustrates elevation. Major peaks are however noted, with elevations. More importantly, the map illustrates access roads, rivers, hotels, natural features, waterfalls, and railroads. The verso features our engraved scenes from the White Mountains based on artwork by Benjamin Champney.
Publication History and Census
This map was engraved and published for George Phillips Bond based upon his own travels in the White Mountains form 1850 - 1852. It was first issued, as here, in 1853.

Condition

Very good. Laid down on archival tissue. Some wear and verso reinforcement on old fold lines.
