Description

A rare 1918 World War I poster features a pictorial bird's-eye view map of Florida, printed in St. Augustine. The poster was issued as part of a national collaborative fundraising effort to provide social welfare and recreational services to American soldiers and navy men on the European front. This poster embodies earnest initiative, indicative of the era's approach to social responsibility and support for the military.
A Closer Look
The image features a YMCA logo flanked by a WWI-era soldier on the left and a sailor on the right. In the background, the curved earth rises over a striking sunrise. A view of Florida dominates this part of the image, replete with tropical scenery and grand hotels. This is contrasted by the images below, which depict brutal trench combat and a YMCA dug-out relief center on the front lines. The text implores Florida to meet its 1,000,000 USD campaign goal.
United War Work Campaign
The United War Work Campaign, held from November 11 to 18, 1918, was a significant fundraising initiative during World War I (1914 - 1918) aimed at boosting the morale of American soldiers by providing them with essential recreational and support services. This campaign was a collaboration of 7 major organizations: the YMCA, YWCA, National Catholic War Council, Jewish Welfare Board, War Camp Community Service, American Library Association, and The Salvation Army.

These organizations collectively sought to raise $170,500,000 during this week and surpassed their goal by raising over $203 million. The funds were used to provide soldiers with books, entertainment, spiritual support, and basic amenities such as warm clothing and hot meals to boost their morale. The campaign was supported by a robust publicity effort, including posters, pins, and other materials designed to encourage civilian donations to support the troops.

Although this campaign took place at the end of World War I, it represents a moment of national unity where various community organizations came together under a single banner to aid the war effort.

Cartographer

The Record Company (October 21, 1894 - Present) was a daily newspaper based out of St. Augustine. The Company was founded in 1894 by Charles F. Hopkins. During World War I (1914 - 1918), much like other newspapers across the country, The Record would have likely contributed to campaigns such as the United War Work Campaign by promoting war bonds, local fundraising efforts, and updates on Florida’s soldiers. It remains active as the St. Augustine Record. More by this mapmaker...
