Georg Joseph Cöntgen (May 17, 1752 - January 28, 1799) was a German engraver and painter. Born in Mainz, Cöntgen' (sometimes Coentgen) father and grandfather were engravers. Cöntgen moved to Frankfurt am Main sometime before 1776, when he married Elisabeth Mund (1752 - 1783), the daughter of painter Johann Samuel Mund (1724 - 1794). He and his wife founded a drawing institute in 1799, where Cöntgen taught painting and Elisabeth taught drawing, painting, and etching (all learned from her father).
