Peter Saxonius (August 16, 1591 - September 16, 1625) was a German mathematician and astronomer. He studied at the Altdorf Academy with the astronomer, mathematician, and instrument maker Johann Praetorius, eventually succeeding him as professor of mathematics. After the academy became a university in 1624, two chairs of mathematics were set up. Saxonius took the chair for higher mathematics, accompanied by Johann Christoph Odontius as professor of lower mathematics. Saxonius died a year later, leaving a planned series of annotated works by classic Greek mathematicians unfinished. His only publication was a posthumous broadside, Maculae solares ex selectis observationibus Petri Saxonii Holsati, recording his observations of sunspots in the year 1616.
